Obsidian's Lament, Shala Miller

  • lumber room 419 Northwest 9th Avenue Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

Shala Miller performs Obsidian's Lament on the occasion of the final week of The Rose, curated by Justine Kurland. A series of three 5-minute performances, taking place at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm

lumber room is pleased to present Obsidian's Lament, a performance by multidisciplinary artist, vocalist, and writer Shala Miller. Obsidian is a fictional character who serves as a kind of alter ego for the artist, created at the beginning of this year to process their rage as a black Femme person. An extension of their work on view at the gallery,"Obsidian's Lament" unfolds through a series of three live performances throughout the day, each one recorded in real-time and subsequently playing throughout the gallery until the next performance. During the performance, Miller will use a voice loop pedal, creating a chorus-like effect to build harmony and echo, to speak to the experience of grief that comes along with betrayal and desire for vengeance. The voice loop pedal allows Miller to craft a unique auditory experience that blurs the boundaries between voice and technology, challenging the audience's perception of harmony, discord and time. These three distinct performances aim to challenge preconceived notions of harmony, inviting viewers to embrace the beauty found within disharmony.
